A mouthguard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. A mouthguard is usually used to prevent injury in contact sports, and variations of mouthguards can be used as a treatment for tooth grinding (bruxism), or as part of certain dental procedures, such as tooth whitening.
Mouthguards are a form of protection against trauma, which can be complicated and expensive to treat.
Mouthguards where first used as protection for boxers in the early 1900’s and have since become common place for all contact sports including but not limited to football, soccer, hockey and martial arts. In fact any situation where there is a risk of injury to the teeth lips and gums.
The Australian Dental Association recommends a custom-fitted mouthguard for all Australians who participate in contact sport or sports with high risk of dental injury.
In fact many junior sporting associations make it mandatory for the children to wear them.
A custom-fitted mouthguard makes breathing and speaking are a lot easier when wearing your mouthguard, and overall are a lot more comfortable than their ‘boil and bite’ counterparts. These are the mouthguards that you can purchase from a chemist or sports store that offer less protection as they are ill fitted and loose in the mouth, which can be dangerous during impact.
The process involves two steps; firstly we will take an impression and create a plaster model of your teeth. This model will be used to accurately assess your mouth and design a custom fitted mouthguard.
A few days later your mouthguard is ready and we will advise you how to care for it properly.
